Reconstruction of Wenceslas Square: a new public space in the center of Prague

Prague authorities presented a project of the large-scale reconstruction of Wenceslas Square, which will begin in 2022 and will be completed within a year.

According to the project by an architect Jakub Ziegler, after the reconstruction of Wenceslas Square trams will not run through the center of the square, as it was 40 years ago, but along the road sides, i.e. the rails will be combined with the motorway. The former tramway will be replaced by a 15-metre-wide urban space in the center of the square.

«We want to create a quality public space in the central part of the square,» — says Vice-mayor Dr. Adam Scheinherr.

It is planned to expand sidewalks, plant trees, install new lanterns and benches in the city center.

The reconstruction will be carried out by the architectural studio «Cigler-Marani», which won the architectural competition.
