Moscow is the most popular region in Russia among foreigners
The official portal of the Moscow Mayor and the city government reports that this year Moscow has become the most visited Russian region by foreign tourists.
St. Petersburg ranks second in the ranking of most-visited Russian regions, with Kaliningrad region being third.
Top-5 regions also include the Irkutsk Region and the Republic of Buryatia.
The ranking was made on the basis of the results of cartographic service research, where tourists uploaded maps of Russian cities in the period from June 1 to August 31, 2019.
Earlier, the President of the Russian Union of Travel Industry Sergey Shpilko noted that foreigners are attracted to Moscow primarily by the city atmosphere. According to him, interest in Moscow is generated not so much by sightseeing attractions as by the public, concert and exhibition program, public spaces, street musicians and clean sidewalks.
In 2018, more than 23.5 million people visited Moscow, where18 million are Russian citizens, and the remaining 5.5 million are foreigners. Most of the guests came to the Russian capital from China — 803.6 thousand people, Germany — 321.9, France —149.3, Israel — 144.3 and the United States — 137.8. Compared to 2010, the number of tourists in Moscow increased by 84%.
