«Aspern Seestadt» in the north-east of Vienna was built on the basis of a master plan that was developed in 2006. An area equivalent to the historic centre of Vienna will be home to 20,000 people by 2028.
Vienna’s population is growing by 20,000 citizen each year and the city is projected to have more than two million inhabitants by 2030. To cope with this growth, 13,000 new flats need to be offered each year.
In this context, back in the early 2000s, the Vienna City Council decided to transform the former airport area into a new district of Vienna — in fact, to build a city within a city.
In 2005, a competition was announced for the creation of the master plan for the further development of this area. The process took a year of intensive preparations. The main goal was not to turn the future residential district into a “sleeper town”.

По замыслу архитекторов и проектировщиков, в мини-городе должна быть иерархия между частными, полуобщественными и общественными зелеными и открытыми пространствами, а искусственное озеро в Центральном парке должно стать символом этого мини-города.
Thanks to the radial layout, the entire cycling and pedestrian infrastructure, as well as parks, squares, and alleys, will be oriented towards the central park. This will make it the main connecting element in Vienna’s new district.
A large skate park with streetball courts will be built below the underground station on the lake shore.
At the moment only a third part of the project has been completed: three thousand flats have been delivered in the “Aspern Seestadt” and three student dormitories have been opened.
