Buff-Garden Improvement Project in Tomsk

After a survey of Tomsk residents, the Centre for Urban Environment Development has decided on the approach to the development of the Buff-Garden the focus will be on the naturalness of the park.

In July 2020, the Centre for Urban Environment Development conducted a sociological survey to identify the problems and wishes of Tomsk residents regarding the development of this space.

It found out that the main problems of Buff-Garden, according to residents of Tomsk, are unattended green areas, lack of colour dominants, running paths with a good surface, as well as an unattractive playground, excessive paving and uncomfortable pedestrian paths.

According to the description of the project, the area has great potential to become a citywide green space for ecological recreation, if the quality of its landscaping will be relevant to this standard.

Konstantin Kazantsev, head of the Urban Environment Development Centre, has said that the majority of the Buff-Garden area will not be damaged due to its high ecological and landscape value. The main changes will consist of reconstructing the existing zones and facilities, creating several additional walking paths and adding to the species diversity of plants.

«The Buff-Garden is a natural area. To emphasise this, we have proposed using natural stone paving in several sizes and shades rather than concrete tiles. In our opinion, Natural paving stones will suit the park better, and they can also be resurfaced rather than replaced in the future,» has noted Konstantin Kazantsev.

The Buff-Garden improvement project has been selected for implementation during the rating vote, which has been taken place as part of the “Designing Comfortable Urban Environment” programme (National Project ”Housing and Urban Development”).
