The main street of Nizhny Novgorod will be transformed into the central promenade

As part of the project to prepare Nizhny Novgorod for the 800th anniversary in 2021, it is planned to modernize Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street and the adjacent parks and squares.

Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street, the main shopping and pedestrian street of Nizhny Novgorod is now a transit area, where there is a lack of safe pedestrian connections, recreational and event venues.

One of the main problems of the street is the loss of greenery. Therefore, new trees are to be planted along the entire promenade, some of which will grow in wooden pots. They will be developed especially for Bolshaya Pokrovskaya — each pot will have an engraving with the information about the nearest heritage monument.

New attraction spots and functional zones will appear on the central promenade such as the square of folk arts and crafts or the area for musical performances and temporary fairs near the “October” cinema.

Gorky Square will turn from a typical square with a monument into a walking garden.

In addition to visualizations, the design will include paving types, transport schemes, landscaping elements, planting schemes, drawings of small architectural forms, fountains and playgrounds.

The design project takes into account wishes of the locals, collected in the involvement sessions.

The design for the improvement of Pokrovskaya Street was developed by specialists of Strelka KB. The project is supervised by Institute for Urban Environment Development of the Nizhny Novgorod Region in strategic partnership with ANO Center 800.
