Coral reefs are being restored in Eilat

Coral reefs, which are one of the national treasures of Israel, are being restored in Eilat, an Israeli resort on the Red Sea coast.

The Mayor of the city — Meir Yitzhak Galevi launched an environmental initiative to restore the reefs. It was supported by various organizations as well as local diving clubs.

«Many tourists choose Eilat because it is possible to dive and snorkel there and admire the world of coral in all its diversity. Therefore, it is very important to preserve and protect this natural resource», — commented Vladimir Shklyar, Director of the Department of the Ministry of Tourism of Israel in Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), Advisor to the Embassy of Israel in Russia.

There are no tourists on the city beaches now. This provides an opportunity to engage in the rescue of reefs, which were affected by the storm that hit the resort on March 14.

Rescue activities have started on several beaches, from the north to the south coast, including Katsa beach. Rescue workers are sinking to the bottom of the Bay of Eilat to collect hundreds of fragments of broken corals. Then they are placed in a special underwater nursery for recovery before being transplanted into the natural environment.
